Books that take you places

Travel doesn’t have to be a physical experience, rather it can be enjoyed through a mental exercise. One thing the pandemic has taught all of us is finding stillness within ourselves and living in the moment is the fundamental truth we must experience first. There are other experiences that can give us the pleasure of travel without hopping on a plane and one of them is reading a good book. One that will trigger emotion(s) and take you through a journey - wether it be discovering a new place or imagining yourself through a love story. That is travel, my friends - a mental escape into other worlds and dimensions where our imagination is stimulated.

I have 7 books to share that evoke discovery and travel in many different forms. Two of the books are from my friends who are avid readers while the rest of the books are recommendations from you as well as some research I’ve done. I hope you get the chance to explore these books. What a great way to engage your imagination and keep that sense of adventure close to your heart.

Elin Hilderbrand’s Books

Books: The Perfect Couple | The Identicals

In 2020 I decided to finally take my first solo trip ever and visit Nantucket. There are times in your life that you can't sit back and wait for the perfect time, or for your friends schedules to align with yours. I spent one day in Martha's Vineyard and one day in Nantucket. To make it even better, I was reading Elin's book, The Identicals, during my trip. The book is about twin sisters, one that lives in Martha's Vineyard and the other in Nantucket. I'm an avid reader, so my books have taken me all over the world. But there will always be a special place for the books that led me to an island that I feel in love with! - Hope Ndoci

Book: Annie Freeman's Fabulous Traveling Funeral

"Life is an adventure!" Have you heard this phrase before? Probably, but what if the adventure starts after your life has ended. This story follows several women connected by one friend who travel the country to honor her final wishes. Not only do they discover so much about her life, they learn so much more about themselves. It was a refreshing take on a book about travel and friendship. - Nicole Benson-Ayisi

Alain de Botton’s book

Book: The Art of Travel

I bought this book a few years ago because I was incredibly curious in the topic of travel and the psychology behind it. This book is full of different perspectives referencing famous artists who have traveled, royalty from past history to modern people living today. Alain mainly focuses on the reality of travel and how at times it doesn’t match what people daydream about. The author then suggests how we can learn to be a little happier in our travels. Everyone experiences travel so differently, but for me even the annoying things that come with travel are worthwhile. It’s best not to focus on the negative however and that’s what this book points out that no one really talks about. - Laerta Premto
