How to pick a frame

Imagine cooking your favorite meal and you plate it on a dish. Then you place the plate on the table, you sit and begin to enjoy the meal. I wanted to start with this visualization because that is a perfect analogy to use when you buy artwork. The meal or food is the artwork and the plate is the frame you see.

In this post, I will focus on framing, particularly art prints of various sizes. Like I mentioned before, the frame is the crown, the plate, the icing and it will also protect the artwork for many many years to come. That is why framing is sometimes very expensive depending on your taste, but understand that it’s an investment and will last decades if not more if you pass it on to future generations.

There are so many different frames and it’s overwhelming to pick one… I get it. Generally, I go for a minimalistic and modern approach for framing art prints. I stick with black, grey, white, silver or gold frame. I believe the artwork should speak for itself.

Another thing I have in the back of my mind while picking a frame is the home decor and being aware of the type of furniture you have. If your furniture has a neutral tone with pops of color, honestly all of the frame colors I mentioned above would go really well. You can narrow it down further - if you have pops of silver like a lamp, bowl, or a vase, then it’s probably best to pick a silver frame.

Here are a few things to consider when picking a frame color:

  • What is the color of your furniture

  • What color are your walls

  • How busy is the artwork

Lastly, adding a mat is also a nice touch but it’s more than that. A mat is a thin, flat piece of paper-based material included within a picture frame or they’re sold separately, which serves as additional decoration and performs several other, more practical functions, such as separating the art from the glass. Matting frames the artwork really well and holds it together. If you were to pick a mat, try to choose one that has a 2-3 in border. Below are some example of frames that best fit for the Hartford poster or any art you may have.
